“Illinois in the Civil War”
June 7 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Camp Butler: Training Grounds, Prison, Cemetery.
Historian and author Kathleen Heyworth will discuss the origin of Camp Butler as a Civil War training
camp and share how it turned into a Confederate Prisoner of War Camp. Because so many soldiers died
there, President Lincoln declared Camp Butler a National Cemetery in 1862. Also included in the
presentation will be how Camp Butler National Cemetery progressed in the aftermath of a bitter Civil
War, from haphazard war-time burials and the national dilemma on how to honor Confederate dead, to the
beautiful cemetery it is today. After the presentation, attendees have the option to participate in an auto
caravan traveling to Camp Butler for a brief tour of the site.
