Springfield’s downtown district can be described as “modtory” or “histdern.” That’s right — words we just made up to describe a mix of modern and historic all wrapped up in one unique package. Where else can you play Jenga with Mr. Lincoln and buy him a locally brewed craft beer? After all, we are the heart of the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area, so if you are Looking for Lincoln you will be sure to find him.
The district covers roughly 56 blocks which include: landmarks where our 16th President walked, worked and lived; the headquarters of Horace Mann Company designed by world-renowned architect Minoru Yamasaki in the neoformalism style; and iconic retailers and restauranteurs like Recycled Records and Maldaner’s sharing the street with up-and-comers like Urban Sassafras, Yoga7even, Custom Cup Coffee and VELE Restaurant.
Add to that cultural mix: more new apartments going online in 2018, jobs in the thriving medical district next door, and easy transportation choices. Don’t know where to start your exploration of our neighborhood? Leadership Springfield whipped up a few walking tours to get you inspired>
